Cancer is the excessive formation of abnormal cells in the body. It can develop almost anywhere in the body.

How cancer begins-

Cells are the basic units that make up the human body. Cells grow and divide to make new cells as the body needs them. Usually, cells die when they get too old or damaged. Then, new cells take their place.

Various Types of cancer-

Types of cancer divided on the basis of where it begins. Eg Brain Tumor, Skin cancer, Mouth Cancer, Throat Cancer, Bone cancer, Stomach cancer, Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, Uterine cancer..

Four main types of cancer are-

1. Carcinomas– a carcinoma begins in the skin or the tissue that covers the surface of internal organs and glands. Carcinomas usually form solid tumours. They are the most common type of cancer. Example  of carcinoma include prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer.
2. Sarcomas– a sarcoma begins in the tissues that support and connect the body. A sarcoma can develop in fat, muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, blood vessels, lymph nodes, cartilage  or bone.
3. Leukaemia’s– leukaemia is a cancer of the blood. Leukaemia begins when healthy blood cells change and grow uncontrollably. The 4 main types of leukaemia are acute myeloid leukaemia and chronic myeloid leukaemia.
4. Lymphoma– lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the lymphatic system is a network of vessels and glands that help 2 main types of lymphomas, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

How cancer spreads-

As a cancerous tumour grows, the bloodstream or lymphatic system may carry cancer cells to other parts of the body. During this process, the cancer cells grow and may develop into new tumours. This is known as metastasis.
One of the first places the cancer often spreads is to the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are tiny, bean shaped organs that help fight infections. They are located in clusters in different parts of the body, such as the neck, groin area and under the arms.
Cancer may also spread through the bloodstream to distant parts of the body. These parts may include the bones, liver, lungs or brain. Even if the cancer spread, it is still named for the area where it began. Example- if breast cancer spreads to the lungs, it is called metastatic breast cancer, not lung cancer.

Stages of the cancer-
About TNM staging system-
Doctors commonly use the TNM system to describe a cancer’s stage. Doctors answer the following questions based on the results from diagnostic tests, image scans and surgery to remove or get a sample of the tumour.
* How large is the primary tumour? Where is it located?( Tumour, T)
* Has the tumour spread to the lymph nodes? If so, where and how many?( Node, N)
* Has the cancer spread to other part of the body? If so, where and how much?( Metastasis, M)
* Are there any biomarkers or tumour markers linked to the cancer that may make it more or less likely to spread? These are the substances found at higher than normal levels on the surface of the cancer cells or in the blood, urine or body tissues of some people with cancer. For many types cancer, tumour makers can help figure out how likely the cancer is to spread and determine the best treatment options.
* other factors included in the stage-
1. Grade- The grade describes how much cancer cells look like healthy cells when viewed under a microscope. This may be indicated with the use of letter “G” and a number (0 to 4). The doctor compares the cancerous tissue with healthy tissue.
* Tumor  Genetics- Researchers have found ways to determine the genes involved in many types of cancer. Many of these genes may help predict if a specific type of cancer will spread or what treatment will work best.

Cancer Stage group –

Doctors combine the TNM results and other factors specific to the cancer to determine the stage of cancer for each person. Most types of cancer have four stages:- I (1) to IV (4). Some cancers also have a stage 0( zero)
* stage 0- This stage describes cancer in situ, which means ” in place” . Stage 0 cancers are still located in the place they started and have not spread to nearby tissues.
* stage I – this stage is usually a small cancer or tumor that has not grown deeply into nearly tissues.  It also has not spread to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body. It is often called early stage cancer.
* stage II and stage III – In general, these 2 stages indicate large cancers or tumors that have grown more deeply into nearby tissues. They may have also spread to lymph nodes but not other parts if the body.
* stage IV – this stage means that the cancer has spread to other organs or the parts of the body. It may also be called advanced or metastatic stage.
